Weekly Note – Week Beginning 3.4.17

Dear Parents/Carers

Church Visit

Next Wednesday, 5th April, Year 2 shall be visiting the Church to watch the Year 4 Easter Service.  If you are available to accompany us to the Church at 1.15 pm we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Spring Fayre

The Spring Fayre is on Thursday 6th April from 2.00 – 3.30pm and all money raised will go towards Year 6 camp. Children can be collected from classes at 2pm to attend with parents.

Spellings

Beginning next week your child will be bringing home spelling lists. These will contain the spelling-patterns learnt that week and also a couple of high frequency words (tricky words) that are not easy to sound-out or have irregular spelling patterns.  Please help your child to read and then spell these words.  They can practise writing them on the opposite page of their books until they are confident at spelling the words.  Some children will be able to spell these words already, especially as we have been learning them during the week – if this is true for your child please practise putting these words into different contexts and asking your child to write a couple of sentences. We will not be having formal spelling tests but the children will need to use these words in their lessons.

Tips for practising sounds and words:

  • Encourage your child to sound-out the word using ‘Fred Talk’ (saying each sound that they can hear, e.g. t–r-ay…tray!) and ensure that they listen carefully to write every sound that they can hear in the word.
  • Encourage your child to think of and write other words with the same sound (words that rhyme are a good place to start!).
  • Revise previous sounds and look back at previous spellings as this will help your child to retain them.
  • If you are reading with your child and come across one of the sounds, point it out and remind them of the sound that it makes e.g. If they see an a and a y together it makes the sound ay.
  • You might like to try the app ‘Squeebles Spelling Test’ which lets you add the new words each week. Children earn squeebles and points to spend when they get words correct.

Please ensure this book is returned to school every Thursday.

If you have any questions, feel free to come and speak to me.

Plastic Bags

The children have produced some fantastic artwork this term which they will be bringing home next week. Please can your child bring a few carrier bags to school to transport their models home – they are quite large and fragile and it would be a shame if they did not survive the journey from home to school!

Swimming and Games

The children will begin swimming when we return after Easter

Children will need their kit on the following days:

Miss Geall’s class: Thursday afternoon (1.15pm)

Mrs Ash’s class: Thursday afternoon (1.50pm)

Mrs Ashworth’s class: Friday morning (11.00am)

If you are able to come in to help with your child’s swimming session then please let the class teacher know.

Games/PE kit will be required on the following days:

Miss Geall’s class: Monday

Mrs Ash’s class: Friday

Mrs Ashworth’s class: Thursday

End of Term

Just a reminder that school finishes at 1pm on Friday 7th April.  Children do not need to bring lunch but they can bring an additional snack.

We hope you have a good Easter holiday and we look forward to seeing the children again on Wednesday 26th April.

Many thanks,

Mrs Ashworth, Miss Geall, Mrs Ash
