Weekly note- week beginning 21.5.18

Year 2 Weekly Note – 21.5.18

Dear Parents/Carers,

Maths
Next week the children will be having an assessment week in Maths where we will be covering lots of different mathematical areas covered over the course of the year.

Walk to School Week- A reminder
Next week we are taking part in ‘Walk to School Week’ and we are encouraging children to walk to school. This is to help promote a healthy mind and body and hopefully encourage walking/cycling to school on a regular basis. The children will be bringing home a healthy walking activity diary and can collect stickers for each day that they walk. Please note that if walking the whole way to school is not possible, children can still collect stickers for walking a part of the way.

EPIC Week
Next week is Epic week! Your children should have by now, all come home with a letter explaining what their activity for the week will be. Please read this carefully as it may be necessary for you to provide something extra for the week eg extra clothes, swimming kit, apron etc depending on their assigned activity.Thank you. These activities will be taking place every afternoon, culminating in a whole school celebration on the field with a parade and an ice-cream on Friday.

Swimming
Please vote that Mrs Ash and Mrs Page’s classes will not be swimming next Friday due to Epic Week.

Half Term
A reminder that this half term finishes on Friday 25th May at the usual time. We wish you all a lovely week’s holiday and we look forward to seeing the children again on the 4th June.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Maths

Next week the children will be learning to describe position and direction using the vocabulary of right, left, clockwise and anti clockwise. We will then be moving onto coordinates which will be  linked to our Pirate topic.

Literacy

During literacy lessons the children will be researching what life was like as a pirate, the jobs they had to do and what life was like on board the ships.

Spelling Books

Please could all spelling books be returned to school on Thursdays so that the new spelling lists can be stuck in ready for your child to take home on Friday. If your child does not have their book in school we will give them the list which will hopefully make its way home! If you could stick it into the book that would be really helpful.

Walk to School Week

During the week beginning 21st May, we are taking part in ‘Walk to School Week’ and are encouraging children to walk to school (even if it is just some of the way). This is to help promote a healthy mind and body and hopefully encourage walking/cycling to school on a regular basis. The children will be bringing home a healthy walking activity diary and can collect stickers for each day that they walk.

EPIC Week

We are busy planning an ‘Epic week’ for the children which will take place during the week commencing 21st May. During these afternoons, staff will be offering a range of exciting activities such as musical theatre, outdoor activities, epic experiments, fun with clay, sewing, ball skills, or trips to the GSPCA to look at animal welfare. The children will be working with peers from Y3 (and occasionally other year groups) and we hope that they will have lots of fun alongside learning a range of new skills. On the final Friday of Epic week, we will have a whole school parade around the field, celebrate successes and enjoy an ice cream.

Decider Skills

We are introducing these skills to the children in class and finding them really valuable in helping them recognise and deal with emotions and situations which may result in negative feelings or actions.

There was a very successful parent and carers information evening explaining this programme which you may have already attended. If you missed this evening, there will be an opportunity to attend  on 22nd May at 3.15-4.30pm in the music drama room. There will be a crèche for children in the main hall. Please let the school know if you would like to come and if you need a space in the crèche. For more information visit: http://www.thedecider.org.uk/

Many thanks for your continued support

Year 2 Weekly Note 4.5.18

4.5.18

Dear Parents/Carers,

Pirate Topic

As next week is a two day school week with a visit to the beach, our work will mainly focus on our pirate topic.  This week we received a ‘letter’ from a pirate called Seagull Sid who is coming to Guernsey in search of shipwrecks and great treasures hidden at the bottom of the sea!  He has asked the children to help by sending him a map of Guernsey on which they need to mark a safe place for him to anchor the Rum Runner – well away from the view of any passing Navy ships!

Having looked at the Guernsey coastline we have decided that a sheltered cove on the South Coast might be best. Our trip to Moulin Huet is therefore to investigate whether it would be a safe anchorage and to collect other information that will help them describe the bay and surrounding area – things he might use as landmarks or need to be wary of!

The children will not have phonics lessons next week and will therefore not receive spellings on Friday

Moulin Huet Visit

For our visit  to the beach next week (Mrs Ash’s Class and half of Mrs Page’s class  – Thursday 10th May and Mrs Ashworth’s Class along with the other half of Mrs Page’s Class (Mrs Page will notify you as to which day your child is going)  – Friday 11th May) your child will need to come to school in comfortable clothing (non-uniform) and shoes. We will be walking from school to the beach and the children will be clambering over rocks so trainer-type shoes are essential.  If it is very wet we will postpone the trip but your child may need a light waterproof in case of showers.

We will be returning to school for lunch but please ensure your child has a large snack and extra drink for the beach.  They will need a small rucksack with them on this day so they can carry their things with them and be hands-free.

Year 2 Open Afternoon – Pirate Day

Just an advance notice that we will be inviting you in to work/play with your child from 1.30pm on  Thursday June 14th for our pirate day.  The children can come to school dressed as a pirate on this day and will be having lots of pirate fun and activities in the morning as well.

School closure days- week beginning 7th May  – Just a reminder that school is closed Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th May. We will be back to normal on Thursday 10th May.

Many thanks for your continued support
