Weekly Note – Week Beginning 3.4.17

Dear Parents/Carers

Church Visit

Next Wednesday, 5th April, Year 2 shall be visiting the Church to watch the Year 4 Easter Service.  If you are available to accompany us to the Church at 1.15 pm we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Spring Fayre

The Spring Fayre is on Thursday 6th April from 2.00 – 3.30pm and all money raised will go towards Year 6 camp. Children can be collected from classes at 2pm to attend with parents.

Spellings

Beginning next week your child will be bringing home spelling lists. These will contain the spelling-patterns learnt that week and also a couple of high frequency words (tricky words) that are not easy to sound-out or have irregular spelling patterns.  Please help your child to read and then spell these words.  They can practise writing them on the opposite page of their books until they are confident at spelling the words.  Some children will be able to spell these words already, especially as we have been learning them during the week – if this is true for your child please practise putting these words into different contexts and asking your child to write a couple of sentences. We will not be having formal spelling tests but the children will need to use these words in their lessons.

Tips for practising sounds and words:

  • Encourage your child to sound-out the word using ‘Fred Talk’ (saying each sound that they can hear, e.g. t–r-ay…tray!) and ensure that they listen carefully to write every sound that they can hear in the word.
  • Encourage your child to think of and write other words with the same sound (words that rhyme are a good place to start!).
  • Revise previous sounds and look back at previous spellings as this will help your child to retain them.
  • If you are reading with your child and come across one of the sounds, point it out and remind them of the sound that it makes e.g. If they see an a and a y together it makes the sound ay.
  • You might like to try the app ‘Squeebles Spelling Test’ which lets you add the new words each week. Children earn squeebles and points to spend when they get words correct.

Please ensure this book is returned to school every Thursday.

If you have any questions, feel free to come and speak to me.

Plastic Bags

The children have produced some fantastic artwork this term which they will be bringing home next week. Please can your child bring a few carrier bags to school to transport their models home – they are quite large and fragile and it would be a shame if they did not survive the journey from home to school!

Swimming and Games

The children will begin swimming when we return after Easter

Children will need their kit on the following days:

Miss Geall’s class: Thursday afternoon (1.15pm)

Mrs Ash’s class: Thursday afternoon (1.50pm)

Mrs Ashworth’s class: Friday morning (11.00am)

If you are able to come in to help with your child’s swimming session then please let the class teacher know.

Games/PE kit will be required on the following days:

Miss Geall’s class: Monday

Mrs Ash’s class: Friday

Mrs Ashworth’s class: Thursday

End of Term

Just a reminder that school finishes at 1pm on Friday 7th April.  Children do not need to bring lunch but they can bring an additional snack.

We hope you have a good Easter holiday and we look forward to seeing the children again on Wednesday 26th April.

Many thanks,

Mrs Ashworth, Miss Geall, Mrs Ash

Year 6 Spring Fayre-Thursday 6th April

Year 6 children are planning and running a Spring Fayre to raise money for their summer camp. They need to raise £6,000!

The year 6 children will be selling raffle tickets before and after school from Tuesday 28th March. They are collecting prizes but would also be very grateful for any extra donations for the raffle e.g. Easter Eggs, games, vouchers etc.
As well as stalls run by Year 6, there will also be a Bring and Buy sale of books, toys, games etc. Again, donations would be welcome, as well as any offerings for the very popular cake stall. Any cakes can be brought in on the Thursday morning – these are incredibly popular and the children always run out so don’t be afraid to ‘overdo’ it!
Year 6 would like as many children as possible to come. If they wish to come before 3pm, they must be collected from their classrooms by an adult –
2pm: Infants/ General public
2:30pm: Juniors
Juniors are welcome to come unaccompanied after 3pm.
Thank-you for all your support – it is much appreciated.
We are really excited and looking forward to a fantastic Spring Fayre!
Hope to see you there…
Year 6 children

Weekly Note – For Week Beginning 27th March 2017

24.3.17

Dear Parents,

Maths

Next week the children will be learning to recognise that the equals sign means ‘the same as’ . They will investigate and record their own balanced number sentences e.g. 4 + 2 = 5 + 1, 12 + 8 = 15 + 5

Literacy

Next week the children will be reading alternative versions of the Three Little Pigs and focusing particularly on the characters, switching known storyland ‘baddies’ into ‘goodies’. Over the next couple of weeks we shall continue to work with traditional tales and begin to think about planning and then writing our own traditional tale.

Spellings

We will soon be sending home weekly spellings list.  These will be sent home from your child’s phonics teacher and will reflect the spelling pattern learnt that week.  More information will follow shortly.

We will be creating papier mache planets next week and would be very grateful if you could send in newspapers that you have finished with.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Mrs Ash, Mrs Ashworth and Miss Geall

Weekly Note – 17.3.17

Dear Parents / Carers,

Next week the children will be continuing their work with missing number sums e.g.  18 + ___ = 25  and finding the inverse of + and – sums e.g. 22 + 7 = 29,  7 + 22 = 29, 29 – 22 = 7 and 29 – 7 =22.

In literacy the children have finished writing about space and will be moving on to looking at traditional tales and focusing on description of characters.

Red Nose Day

Just a reminder that children can wear red to school on Friday 24th March for Red Nose Day and we will be collecting 50p to go towards the charity if you would like to donate.   A special talent show assembly will be held in the afternoon for children to perform to the school.  Well done to Jenson, Jago and Charlotte who have been voted by their classmates to perform in this assembly.  Red noses can be bought in class for £1, we have enough for one per child and these can be worn on the 24th.

Library Visit

The children will be visiting the Guille-Alles library (Monday 20th Mrs Ash’s and Mrs Ashworth’s class, Tuesday 21st Miss Geall’s class) next week to take part in an interactive / craft making session about dinosaurs.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Mrs Ash, Mrs Ashworth and Miss Geall

Weekly note- week beginning 12.3.17

12.3.17

Dear Parents/Carers,

Maths
Next week we shall be covering the following areas in maths;
Creating number fact families using our knowledge addition/subtraction and also multiplication/division i.e. if I know that 12 + 8 = 20 then I also know 8+12=20, 20-12=8 and 20-8=12.
Understanding that the equals sign means ‘the same as’ and using this to help solve problems such as 20 – 8 = 7 +5
Finding the unknown number in a number calculation e.g. 20 = ? + 12

How to show the inverse of division and multiplication e.g. 18 ➗ 6 = 3 so 6 x 3 = 18.

School trip
Thank you very much to those who have already offered to help on our visit to the Guille-Alles Library on 20th and 21st March. We are still looking for more helpers so please let us know if someone in your family would be willing to help.
Mrs Ash’s and Mrs Ashworth’s class will be going at 9am on Monday 20th March and returning at 10.45am.
Miss Geall’s class will be going at 9am on Tuesday 21st March and returning at 10.45am.

Red Nose Day
If your child would like to enter the talent show competition which will be taking place on Red Nose Day, they need to prepare their talent (this can be anything from singing to dancing to gymnastics!) to their class on Wednesday 15th March. The winning child from each class will then perform to the whole school on Friday 24th March during assembly time.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Ash, Mrs Ashworth and Miss Geall

Weekly note- week beginning 6.3.17

Week Beginning 6.03.17
Dear Parents/Carers,

Maths
Next week we shall be continuing to work on the concept of division and learning the term ‘remainder’. To help with this work you may find some of the following ideas helpful:
Take a handful of pasta or similar and put it into groups of 5 – how many groups of 5can you make? How many altogether? How many left over? Can you make groups of different amounts using the same amount of pasta?
Share different sets of objects between 2, 5, 10, 3. Counting accurately the starting number and then sorting into a specific number of groups is something the children often find quite difficult.
How many 2s in 8, 5s in 25 etc
Quick fire number halving facts
Ongoing practice of multiplication facts

Literacy
This week the children have been learning instructions for ‘How to Catch an Alien’ and looking at the instruction features. Next week the children will be writing their own instructions about how to look after an alien (once they’ve caught it!)

School Trip
During the week beginning the 20th March, the Year 2 children will be visiting the Guilles-Alles Library in town for a dinosaur-themed stories and arts and craft session. Mrs Ash and Mrs Ashworth’s class will be visiting the library on the 20th March between 9am and 10.45 am and Miss Geall’s class will be visiting on the 21st March between 9am and 10.45am. If you would be willing to accompany the children on this visit then please could you let your child’s class teacher know.

Many thanks,
Year 2 Team
