Weekly Note – week commencing 30.1.17

Dear Parents/Carers,

Literacy
Over the next few weeks the children will be moving on from writing their story about a little boy’s journey to space and will begin to look at non-fiction space texts. The children will be developing their skills so that they can write a non-chronological report about a planet. This week they will be identifying the ‘ingredients’ for a good report …
Use a clear title so the reader knows what the report is all about
Organise the information into sections with sub- headings
Good description
Technical vocabulary
Connectives to add in extra information
Sentence openers which show how the reader might feel when reading the information, e.g. amazingly, interestingly, weirdly, fantastically, etc.
Try using questions to hook the reader’s interest
If you are sharing a non- fiction text with your child please encourage them to look for these features.

Maths
In maths we will be focusing on subtraction, initially taking away 1 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers and then moving on to use knowledge of place value to subtract 2 digit numbers, taking away the tens then the units.

PE
As the weather is particularly cold at the moment please can your child bring joggers, sweatshirts or similar and outdoor trainers to wear for games lessons

Reading Evening
There is a ‘Teach your child to read’ information evening on Monday 30th January for Year 2 and up parents in the school hall 7-8pm.

Helping your child become a better reader

Why bother?

“Children of parents who take an active interest in their schooling make greater progress than other children.” DfES

You are invited to an information evening in the main hall on Monday 30th January from 7-8pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn how to best support your children with their reading and comprehension. On the evening, children will have the opportunity to listen to stories in the music and drama room.

Please sign and return the slip your child brings home today to let us know whether you are able to attend.

Weekly Note 20.1.17

Dear Parents/Carers,

Next week  in maths we will be working on addition.  We will be reviewing strategies to help us add 1 and 2 digit numbers, and learning to add larger 2 digit numbers by partitioning.  ‘Hit the button’ is a good website and app the children will enjoy to help them practise their mental maths skills.  http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Over the next few weeks the children will be researching planets and writing a report about a planet, researching any facts at home will help them with this.

Book Week Competition

This year we will be once again holding a Book Week from 6th – 10th February.

During this week Key Stage 1 shall be having a visit from Kristina Stephenson, author of the Sir Charlie Stinky Socks books.

There is a website which tells you more about the books, which are also available as ebooks and an interactive iPad app! www.sircharliestinkysocks.co.uk

To prepare the children for this visit the Schools Library Service have organised a competition. Your child should have brought home an entry form on which they can design a sock! The brighter and bolder the better!

Please return all entries to school by next Monday 23rd January (These can be handed to your child’s teacher)

Three entries will be shortlisted and sent to the library who will choose a ‘Top 3.’ These children will be invited to attend a Public Author performance at Castle Cornet at 4.30pm on Thursday 9th February. (If you are interested in attending please get hold of the library!) The winners will each receive a prize from Kristina herself.

If you’d like any more information please contact the library on 714098.

Good luck everyone!

Weekly Note 16.1.17

Week Beginning 16.1.17

Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s lovely to have Year 2 back at school; the children have settled in well and are making a great start to the new term.

In maths next week the children will continue to learn about fractions and will focus on finding fractions of numbers e.g. ½ of 6, ¼ of 20.

During literacy lessons the children will be rewriting the story of The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers.

We have had quite a few incidents with children falling out or becoming upset over pokemon cards and other things brought in from home.  We ask that these and other toys are not brought into school please.

Just a reminder that we would be very grateful for any resources the children could use to make their space rockets…

  • Cylindrical shaped tubes
  • Plastic bottles
  • Bottle tops
  • Small foil cake cases
  • yogurt drink bottles

or anything else shiny and ‘space like’.

Wet Playtimes

Please ensure that your child has a colouring book that they can keep in their tray and use during wet play.

For Mrs Ash’s class – Please note that PE days have now changed to Thursday and Friday and library to Wednesday.

Many thanks,

Mrs Ash, Mrs Ashworth, Miss Geall

Weekly Note – week commencing 9.1.16

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the Spring term. We hope that you have had an enjoyable Christmas.

Maths
Our whole school maths target for this term is linked to learning multiplication and division facts. This week we shall be assessing the children and setting targets accordingly. Your child will then bring home a letter outlining the targets that they will be working on. These targets will be checked regularly in timed assessments which the children will then bring home to show you how well they are meeting their targets.
Next week in maths we shall be learning about fractions where we will be working on the following steps;
understand that if we split something into two parts that are equal, we call each part ‘a half’
understand that if we split something into four parts that are equal, we call each part ‘one quarter’
colour in sections of shapes to show both halves and quarters
use the correct notation for writing a half and one quarter ( ½ ¼)
use the correct notation for thirds (1/3)
understand that when a shape or object is split into three equal parts, they are called thirds
write the result of a fraction calculation correctly, for example: 1/2 of 6 = 3
recognise three quarters of a shape
use the correct notation for three quarters ( ¾)
understand that when an object is split into quarter parts, three of those parts make up 3/4 of the whole
begin to calculate 3/4 of lengths, sets of objects and quantities

Topic
Our main topic for this term is Space and we have lots of cross curricular activities planned which we hope the children will enjoy. Next week we shall begin by looking at the different planets in the solar system before selecting a few to research in more detail. We shall then be writing non chronological reports on these planets. We are always happy for the children to bring additional resources or information from home that they may want to share with their class mates.

Art Resources
To help us travel into our space journey we are beginning by making our own space rockets. To boost our resources for this project, if you have any of the following items at home we would be very pleased to receive them:

• Cylindrical shaped tubes
• Plastic bottles
• Bottle tops
• Small foil cake cases
• yogurt drink bottles

Many thanks,
Mrs Ashworth, Mrs Ash, Miss Geall
